The best songs of the year were all over the shop as numbers 11-20 showed, and numbers 1 to 10 are no different.
Brandy Clark tops the list with something sharp and punchy (and closes the list with something sad but potent, if you remember) which sounds nothing like the pulse-and-sooth of Underworld or the Indo-Australian hip hop melange of L-Fresh The Lion.
Clark is not the only country act on the list but at this end of the table she’s sharing space with the liquid R&B of Drake, twice, the shifting sands of Beyonce’s take on electro R&B, and some angular grooves from David Bowie.
Joining Bowie in the afterlife and on the list is Leonard Cohen who affects the Greek islands in a Casio-filled New York bar, just where Brendan Maclean would be singing his lament late in the evening and where Michael Kiwanuka would be getting spritely funky early evening.
So now, numbers 1-10 of the best songs of 2016.
Brandy Clark – Girl Next Door
L-Fresh The Lion – Get Mine
Drake – Feel No Ways
David Bowie – Sue (Or In A Season Of Crime)
Beyonce – Sorry
Brendan Maclean - Undetectable
Michael Kiwanuka - Black Man In A White World
Drake - With You
Leonard Cohen – Traveling Light
Underworld – Ova Nova
